![]() ![]() ![]() This begs the question, where does the story go from here, and if the Emperor is back, what’s his connection and contribution to the new trilogy? Emperor Palpatine created the Skywalker line She is not exceptional, the Resistance, Supreme Leader Snoke, and Luke are dead, and Kylo is the new Emperor. It’s here where The Last Jedi fails in a cinematic sense, Rey, the Resistance, and Kylo lack plot points to conclude. In The Last Jedi, Rey finds out her parents are nobodies she isn’t unique and that the Resistance is dead. In The Empire Strikes Back, it’s revealed that Vader is Luke’s father, in Episode 2: Attack of the Clones, it’s revealed that Anakin is falling to the Darkside and that the Sith are controlling everything from the shadows. Though the characters in this second film don’t achieve their plot goals, the plot does set them up to succeed for the third film.Īdditionally, the second film in a trilogy tends to be the Hero’s lowest point while also revealing something to the audience we didn’t know before. I argue that this aspect of the Hero’s Journey is lacking in the new trilogy, and it’s why the Emperor is back. They grow from weak characters to strong ones, and it’s from watching these characters grow that we, the audience find entertainment and fulfillment. Win or lose, one thing that brings all these characters together is the fact that they have grown and arcs. The Hero either wins as is the case with Luke Skywalker, a farm-boy turned pilot, turned Jedi Master, or he falls, which is the case of Anakin Skywalker, who was a slave-turned pilot and eventual genocidal Sith Lord. In these stories, the Hero is tasked with an impossible challenge, leaving only one of two outcomes for the audience to witness. Harry Potter must become a wizard and defeat the monster that killed his parents, and Frodo Baggins must destroy the One Ring while resisting it’s corrupting power. The Hero’s Journey and the lack of one in The New Trilogyįrom Harry Potter to Frodo Baggins, the “Hero’s Journey” is one of the most original forms of storytelling ever created and the most used in Hollywood. With Disney’s moneymaker slowing down, why would Disney halt the production Star Wars after only five films? The question may be a puzzling one, but I have a theory, and it’s the reason why the Emperor is laughing at the end of the Star Wars Episode 9 trailer. That said, Marvel is quickly coming to a slow-down /reboot phase after its phase three plans ended with the final film in the Avengers Saga. Since then, the Marvel franchise has grossed over 21 billion dollars worldwide and continues to grow. This move is an unusual one as Disney’s other property Marvel is just finishing its 17th film since the acquisition of the company in 2009. ![]() It’s because of this that it’s surprising to hear Disney has already announced plans to slow down the production of new Star Wars films. Since then, the House of Mouse has recouped its initial investment making much of its revenue on it’s critically received films and merchandise. It’s been nearly seven years since Disney first announced the intention to acquire Lucas Film and the Star Wars property for the groundbreaking purchase of four billion dollars. ![]()
